Love Reiner but Beecham's is so much more magical (and better recorded, no garish forte string sound), as is Ansermet's **1st** outing with the PCO, (not his later snoozer with the Suisse Romande).
Ansermet also turns in what is IMHO the most uncanny, stunning recording of Nightingale as well, and the conductor does better with the hoocy cootchy dance elements than Reiner.
The EMI Beecham may mean ordering from Ebay UK, but both Ansermet's can be had in the US for pennies on the Treasury label.
Follow Ups:
I agree completely about Ansermet's Song of the Nightingale. One of the best examples of this work and Anserment's work on record that I've heard. And I like his Scheherazade with the PCO very much too. But here again, the underrated but best version on vinyl for my money is Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, circa 1963.
Alas, in his final years recording for RCA, Ormandy made some uninspired records, whether because of his advanced age or RCA's incompetence, and that seems to have sealed his reputation among record collectors.
If you have the original RCA Reiner version, there are very good notes by Richard Mohr on the back. Too bad if Chesky couldn't reproduce them.
His EMI Strauss "Also Sprach Zarathustra" is one of the most intense ever recorded, but it's Digital.
I also prefer his Bartok Mandarin Suite to all others.
Yes, maybe the problem was RCA, not that Ormandy was getting old. RCA really botched some classical stuff in the 1970s. Some critics have blamed the aging Ormandy, but what do they know? ;-)
I have a quite a few versions of this piece, so I don't think I'll be buying another any time soon. Culling of the collection will happen, when time (yeah, right!) permits.
My curiousity is why the Reiner/CSO has two covers if it's the same recording (albeit with "Song Of..." on one version)? Guess I'd just like to know the history...

I vaguely recall Chesky having issues over licensing the artwork on all the Living Stereos they re-issued. All of them lack the original cover art.
