Hi, middleground,
Two things come to mind in response to your question:
1) The durability of cartridges seems to be inversely proportional to cost; more expensive cartridges tend to be more prone to damage and we're purchasing more expensive cartridges these days.
2) Using a cueing lever will eliminate the chance of pushing the tonearm and subjecting the cartridge to things it wasn't designed to do; if you manually lift the tonearm you're more likely to end up damaging the stylus/cantilever.
So people can either buy inexpensive cartridges and not care what happens to them, or, make sure they use the cueing lever to avoid damaging good cartridges. And never wear a poncho while operating a turntable.
Regards,
Tom
