I know what he's talking about. I hear it all the time on older records that didn't use Dolby noise reduction. The tape hiss starts abruptly just before the music starts and at the end the tape hiss stops just after the music stops. I had never thought much about it before, but now I'm rather curious. I wonder if the songs were possibly spliced together with some blank plastic splice tape in-between. Anyway, I know what he's talking about.

EMI referred to those non-tape spacings as "rills." You can see them on master tapes on the LP covers from the Mofi Beatles box set. See link.
