even though the tonearm lifts off at end of play it still keeps spinning sometimes - mostly when I use manual start, but somnetimes when I use auto start too. I am going to check how level it is is case that is the problem..

yep
A sensor, probably optical, is the most common cause. Whether this is relaceable or not, I haven't the foggiest. Otherwise it's likely a failure in one of the logic circuits. Good luck with that.
In either case, download the service manual from VE.
