Picked this up today at HPB, $19.99, #0693. Remastered from orig analog master tapes by Bernie Grundman, 200g vinyl pressed by Quality Record Pressing. I A-B'd with orig mastered by "sterling RL", i.e., Robert Ludwig. Conclusion: if you don't have the RL original, I would suggest running, not walking, to get this. I was confident it would be good, given Bernie Grundman's reputation & all the wonderful reissues he's done for Classic. It did not disappoint. How did it compare with orig RL? It was a horse race (RL is a tough std to beat). In the end, it was a photo finish, but I think Bernie won. He got not just great bass & detail, as did RL, on this album, the micro-dynamics might be slightly better & the bass is all there and so very well controlled & defined. Plus, the vinyl is flat & perfectly quiet & the price is right. Having the orig RL in my possession, I'm still glad I got Bernie's version.Jim

Picked up a copy from the nearest Exchange store. Probably won't spin until tomorrow.
My RL copy's kind of crackly. It'll be nice to have quiet backgrounds if nothing else.By the way, they had a copy of Rainbow Bridge which, according to Acoustic Sounds, isn't scheduled for release until next Tuesday.

They also had a new mono pressing of Please Please Me . Against my better judgement, I might have to buy that one on Monday when I'm back at work.

Screw your better judgment : ) Go for it. Unless you just absolutely need a hole in the middle, I don't see how PPM mono won't satisfy. For one thing, stereo for the first two Beatles albums, for sure, isn't how we think of modern stereo at all (I.e. soundstage, image). There's nothing rolled off on the top end either, IMO. I do respect your "ear" OD, but if you dun like PPM, I'd swear off mono altogether.
Regards,
Jim

Horse race you say? Well, even Gail Zappa has commented in praise of BG by simply saying "Ears!" in the liner notes to the reissue of Zappa's "Hot Rats".
I'm sure Bernie might get a little bit of the hair of the dog off those masters!
I may have to bite...
Thanks for your comments!

Sometimes, Bob Ludwig's mastering is just too much. Grundman is always good.
But...I'll keep my old RL copy of CoL. Trying to spend my money on jazz and classical.

Not trying to tempt you OD (hehe), but this is so signature BG: balanced, layered, detailed, articulate bass, image, etc. Exc & only $20. It's only money (hehe).
