Sevetny-five bucks for Psychedelic Pill on vinyl was bad enough - I passed on that one, but bought Americana, which came across as a bunch of warm-up tracks bashed out by Crazy Horse to get back in sync with each other. Like a fool I then purchased the LP version of a bunch of tunes he recorded in a phone booth (fortunately not the $100+ deluxe version), which sounded like - surprise - a bunch of tunes he recorded in a phone booth. Now he's announced his latest release - a two record set listing for seventy bucks (!) on vinyl. Here's the kick - it's only ten new tunes, repeated over the two abums. One disc is the program as he recorded it - solo in the studio. Second disc is the same thing overdubbed with an orchestra.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me (I am duly shamed). I won't get fooled again.
Follow Ups:
It was 79.99 for the deluxe double vinyl with a limited edition lithograph - plus only 3.99 for economy shipping. The double vinyl without the litho is 69.99.
I have it on order, but I've always been a big Neil Young fan and somewhat of a completist for his vinyl releases.
I guess the question to be asked is how much influence Neil Young actually has on the cost of any album.
The Pono estimated cost for a high resolution download will be pretty much the same as from other outlets - with the explanation the price is set by the labels. It could be much the same with a vinyl release as well - what the market will bear.
Hi, radiodaddy,
Neil has often said that he's not interested in what everybody else is doing and isn't in it just for the money. But he seems to be making a decent living selling us expensive archives and experiments. "Fool me twice..." Is that his fault or ours?
I once considered Neil Young to be one of my favorite artists and still enjoy listening to his works. But nowadays I don't purchase his music unless I've listened to it first. And I'm even less inclined to buy any of his stuff at the prices he's commanding. There's a lot of great music out there and I can purchase two or three albums for one of his latest releases.
I think he's reached a point where he's just messin' with us.
Regards,
Tom
He was recording in a vintage solo recording booth with an integrated, vintage "small time" record transcription system intended for creating a personal novelty record. He did one track in the booth with Jimmy Fallon one night. When they played it, I knew I had no interest in that kind of sound quality.

I've tried to listen to it a few times. I gave up. I just don't get it.
sometime around 2006. Small venue, great performance, very memorable. I don't buy many new records, but nobody is forcing anyone to buy these LP's .
"but nobody is forcing anyone to buy these LP's."
Judging by the way they're burning up the charts that's quite obvious.
Cheers,
Al
if you like that raw, NY & CH sound.
PP might have made a decent single LP, although in fact the single CD isn't much better...
A Letter Home is a fantastic concept album, especially if you only listen to it a couple times.
I'm looking forward to the new one, though I'll start with the CD and take things from there.
NY's ALWAYS been inconsistent, controversial and prone to developing love/hate relationships with his fans.
Nothing new there.

Neil Young quit being relevant in the mid-1980's. His "rebellious loner" shtick wore out its welcome years ago. Now he's had to resort to running a digital server scam and overcharging for his music.
Retirement back in Canada in comfortable obscurity remains a sensible option for him.
Cheers,
Al
Celine Dion, Justin Bieber and now Neil Young.
Why do Americans think that we want these people back?
We got rid of them, you accepted them as your own. They're yours to keep.
No trade backs!
If you don't like Neil Young nobody really cares. Invest your energy in telling us what you do like.
