Hi guys
Yes, I have read THE ANALOG DEPT. Thorens notes over and over and there are absolutely no instructions on mounting a cartridge on the Thorens TP16 tonearm.
Yes they show you how to completely dismantle the arm - change the armtube - in fact how to modify the entire turntable, but nothing on cartridge mounting.
The fact is there appears to be virtually no room for adjustment of the cartridge mounting on the Thorens TP16 (detachable) tonearm head-shell. There are fixed position threaded holes in the head-shell... and that's it.
What am I missing here?

Yes, I have - a few times. Still no clearer and the illustrations are no help at all.

There is a "sled" within the headshell that will slide fore and aft a short ways. It is also possible to rotate the sled enough to correct for offset angles as is needed.It is possible that the "sled" in your TP60 (that's the headshell you have)has become slightly stuck in place. You may have to carefully apply some force to it to free up its motion.
Other advice; always mount/dismount cartridges with the headshell removed from the arm tube.

This was the breakthrough I was looking for... Thanks so much.
I suspected that the underlying metal cartridge mount-plate within the TP16 Head-sell should be able to move fore and aft to offer some cartridge alignment adjustment.
Mine is seized solid.
Question is, how to free it without breaking anything?
Maybe I'll try a bit of gentle heat?
Perhaps I'll take the head-shell off the arm completely; turn it upside down and squirt a bit of CRC on the mount-plate and leave it for a day?

try using a penetrating oil and let it soak in for a few minutes / hours. Most likely the metal in the sled and the metal in the headshell (two different alloys)have some sort of negative interaction or just some oxidation.
If you have some WD-40, squirt some of that into the sled pocket. Then be prepared to wipe the headshell clean after you've got it free.

PS: avoid using force on mechanical objects not fully understood. That way you don't break stuff.

As an aside, do you think that a Technics SL1200 tonearm Head-shell would plug into the TP16 arm? The joint looks very similar... NOT that I am going to break anything on the THORENS... Just wondering?

No. Not interchangeable. The Thorens Tp16 is a straight arm tube with the offset angle built into the headshell itself. The Technics arm has the offset angle bent into the arm tube. Further, the coupler joints are not compatible. The Thorens coupler is pretty much unique to itself and will not interchange with any other brand.

After 5-days of bathing in CRC, the THORENS TP16 head-shell mounting plate finally began to move inside its cage. Once mobile, it was easy to reset the cartridge to the GURU settings that have worked well for me on my LP12/ITTOK/SHELTER 501 MkII.
The SHURE M91ED cartridge I have fitted sounds pretty good up top and upper mids, but seems to be a bit MIA in the lower mid-bass and bass.
With my IFI iPhono I have numerous different settings - particularly as far as load is concerned. The M91ED manual states 400-500pfd for best results, but I can't hear any difference between them at all - even with just 50pfd load.
Am I expecting too much from this front end?
Maybe the GURU settings are no good for SHURE cartridges?
Good news on the "sled' freeing up. That's about par for the course on the TP60 headshell. Btw, that headshell is made out of magnesium. For whatever that might be worth.
I suspect the TP16 arm will be a bit heavy for the m91 ED. But if its sounding good, then that is good.
make sure that the coupler joint betwixt headshell and armtube is tight. That detail can make a difference you might hear.
alignment theorum:
I'd avoid the "guru" protractor and go with a baerwald alignment if at all possible. a two point protractor with nulls at 66 and 121mm will be Baerwald. (also known as Loefgren A) Fwiw, the factory overhang jig will align per Stevenson. Also one that works fine on this TT. So....if you don't have that clear plastic overhang jig that came with the TT when new, find a paper Stevenson based protractor.

Most owners managed to lose both the jig and those plastic spacers in the pic that was used to set vta. One way to do it anyway.

The fact is that just so I'm used to my LP12/Ittok, which offers acres of 'travel' in order to adjust the cartridge to get it spot-on.
I just can't believe the Thorens TP16 is so limited in the potential cartridge positioning; and wondered if I am missing something.

No. It is not a Linn. The turntable was built to a price point designed for mass sales in the early 1970s. Thorens went to great lengths to take the difficulty out of setting up a cartridge for overhang and vta by means of the jig and pack of shims that was supplied with each turntable sold. They wanted to make it as "consumer friendly" as they could.

Do you have the plastic alignment gauge that came with the tonearm? There were also spacers that came with the headshell (or do they come with cartridges? I can't remember). I took the silver Thorens cover off one of my headshells & install the cartridge thru the top.
Sadly I do not. So I'm on my own...
(I'm not keen to damage the head-shell in order to optimally mount the cartridge)
Unless anyone has any insights, I guess I will just have to use the very limited amount of 'play' in the fixed mount position to 'cock' the cartridge one way or another to best meet the 'guru' settings I prefer...
Are you talking about the Allen Wright Guru Alignment? It is actually an absurd alignment geometry that produces excessive tracking error distortion.
When I moved to this GURU alignment - from the traditional - my LP12 really started to sing.
The VACUUM STATE GURU alignment tool includes both setting so you can compare. This is exactly what I did.
I don't pretend to understand the science behind it; I simply use my ears...
