This afternoon I saw a concert given by the Manhattan School of Music's brass quintet. It was great! I've been enjoying a lot of chamber music over the last 2 or 3 years, but strictly strings and winds.
Anyone have any brass quintet records to recommend? Any stellar disks I should hunt down? Thanks in advance for any input.

A pet peeve of mine is the "tradition" of brass quintets playing shlocky music, I want to hear great players playing great music! Those LA Brass sides are the real deal.
Another really great one is the Chicago Brass Quintet on Audiophile Records, but that's very rare. One of these days I'll rip it, I'll try to remember to get in touch and send you the file.

Great recommendation. I forgot all about that one. I also have the Chicago Brass Quintet on Audiophile Records. Red Vinyl, if I recall correctly.
Wow! I waited almost ten years to find one on eBay! I finally got it last year and then of course another one just turned up last week, I though about getting a back up copy but ultimately elected to pass. Mine is regular black vinyl, nice record and an important document in terms of brass playing.

Two other lps are the Crystal Clear direct to disc recordings Music for Organ, Brass & Percussion with Richard Morris & The Atlanta Brass Ensemble.
I played in a few brass quintets many years ago. Always enjoyed the early Empire Brass recordings. The ones on Sine Qua Non label are exceptional. They also have one labeled Russian Brass, it has the Victor Ewald quintets, it's a great recording of brass.
Also the New York Brass with Gerard Schwarz is legendary. Canadian Brass are pretty good, a bit commercial. Phillip Jones LP's are also good.

I have a few copies of that one, amazing playing from Rolf Smedvig. I had a gig about 10 years ago, the Empire Brass played and then Rolf sat in with the orchestra and played alongside me, remarkable player. He never had great orchestral chops(I should talk), he won a seat in the Boston Symphony years ago, but didn't stay.
He has had quite a successful brass quintet career. It's a tough road to go down.

I think the Canadian Brass is wonderful....check them out.
Not a Quintet but I highly recommend Gabrieli/Canzonas For Brass, Winds, Strings and Organ
Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble and E. Power Biggs

For performance and fidelity it might be hard to beat the first three Empire Brass Quintet LPs--Baroque Brass, Renaissance Brass, Russian Brass. If you like brass band music, later they did a couple of American Brass Band Journal LPs with some additional folks. If you like Bernstein's West Side Story they recorded an excellent arrangement for brass quintet on Telarc.
The American Brass Quintet is stellar also, and an early digitally recorded LP on Delos, of Renaissance music, is very good.
If you run into a Canadian Brass Quintet LP that has repertoire that looks appealing, you'll like it.
If you are interested in hearing early music written for smaller ensembles, and find a Tafelmusik LP on Archiv, pick it up.
For a larger group on LP it's hard to beat the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble for performance and fidelity. Their "Glorious Sound of Brass" LP and "Festival of Carols in Brass" LP get steady play during the holidays at our house.
There are others of course, but this list may help you get going.
