Too much, depends.
My .24mV, 4 Ohm internal impedance ZYX R50 likes the 37.5 Ohm taps on the 3440AH best. My system (click on the "A") needs the gain. I call the 150 Ohm switch position the "Columbia" switch because raising the impedance seems to attenuate the treble along with the gain.
The OP doesn't list his system so can't address that.

The AT33PTG has .5mV output and 17 ohms impedance. 1:15 is a perfect match for it. The ZYX R50 has less than half of the gain. For that cartridge, 1:30 is a perfect match. So the 37.5 taps on the 3440A will work fine for the ZYX R50, but the 150 ohm taps will work best for the AT33PTG. The AT33PTGii has .3mV and 10 ohms. In that case, 1:20 would be best and the 3440A would not be a good match in either setting.
