Hagerman Cornet 3 ordered tonight. Checking my tube box, I have many NOS 12AX7s and 12AU7s
or I have a new pair of EH 12AX7s and a new EH 12AU7. Tube poor, I ain't.

Looking forward to your review.
I've been looking for a reasonably priced tube phono pre to replace the internal phono pre in a Luxman SS integrated amp. Need a little tube magic in the chain....

Best budget tube phono preamp I've heard. Under $200.

Yes I have, and John Elison was able to give me some good feedback on his unit. Just trying to weigh my options right now. In fact I see there is an updated version MS23B for around $200 new on Amazon....

I bought mine as a Kit from his Kickstarter project and finished building it 20 days ago.I cannot give detailed explanations because I am using it in my secondary system in not ideal conditions but;
I think it has very fine tonality, excellent transparency and believable, palpable images. It also is silent as a SS pre.No noise, hum and hiss.
It's performance surprised me with SL-1600MKII + Denon 110.It is also a good match with Cinemag SUT + Denon 103.
And I did not make any parts or tubes change yet, all stock.
Good listening,
Hakan

took that joy away from me. Inmate Anumber1, Al Gallacher, built my Cornet 2 and Clarinet line stage for me for the price of a Cornet 2 kit for himself.
My last kit actually was for when I was heavy into amateur radio. Built a monster Heathkit SB-220 2 KW linear amplifier. Sucker used a pait of Eimac 3-500Z tubes the size of coffee cans.

If you want to step up the sound of that Cornet, try a 12FQ7 in place of the 12AU7. The only consideration is filament current; check with Hagerman to be sure that the PS can supply the filament current that is a bit higher for the 12FQ7 than for the 12AU7. Otherwise, the electrical parameters and pin-outs are the same, so no circuit changes are necessary. 12FQ7s are readily available. I speak from experience; replacing the 12AU7 output tube on my Quicksilver preamp with a 12FQ7 was very worthwhile. (This is a known tweak among Quicksilver owners.)

NOS RCA 5814.

I know it sounds sexy, but I think that's just another name for a 12AU7. Anyway, try it, by all means.
As did going to a NOS Mazda 5Y3GB rectifier tube.

I am really interested in your take on the new Cornet.
I'm considering a tube phono stage and it's in my price range.
Thanks.
A couple of good ones to compare it to.

the main reason it comes in under $500 factory assembled. Be interesting to compare it to the Cornet 2. I still have the Dyna 20XL I used with the 2 a lot. Ditto the CineMag SUT.
After running the stock tubes a while, I'll slip in a NOS RCA 5814 and a pair of NOS Mullard 12AX7s.
