using batteries with tube stages will be interesting...
the typical B+ for most tube designs is around 280V and you need heaters, that is easy you just use 12V for series wired heaters :).

Why is more voltage required to tube a phonostage than a DAC, for example?
tubes need about 200 v on the plate. How you get it is a design choice. In tubed dac they use voltage multipliers. In a phono stage there is no reason for one.Dee

Are you saying DACs have to use voltage multipliers anyway so the same multipliers can be used for tubes?
Also, I thought voltage boosting was a noisy operation?
any tubed dac that has a low voltage dc supply will us a dc voltage multiplier to drive the tubes. The ones that has only ac power will have psus that will provide heater and b+ directly

Why is it more common to find a configuration with a low-voltage supply and voltage multiplier in a DAC than in a phonostage?
Usually 3 or 5 v with a couple Amps. It is no big deal to multiply to provide B+ but it is not the easiest solution if you do not need the low voltage supply, it is much easier to to build a linear supply with the voltage needed. If you have to use a voltage multiplier, you almost loose all the advantages of a battery supply :)

Caveats first... I am fairly new to TT's . I have @ one year experience with a Music Hall 5.1 turntable , the stock MM cartridge and it's SS 1.2 phono stage .
I wanted a tubed phono stage and had read good things about the Hagerman stuff .
I just received the Coronet 3 phono stage and have run 18 albums through it so far . The case that it comes with is plastic and definitely not
considered audio jewelry .
For @ twice the price of the MH unit , this thing is a very large step up ! The tone is more realistic , the detail is much better without being
distracting and the separation of the individual sounds is greatly improved . The bass is deeper with more delineation and the highs have a nice sparkle .
For $479 assembled and delivered to my door , I am very pleased !
I can't even imagine what the $3k unit would sound like !
