Nearly 60 years ago the guy across the hall in Freshman dorm had AR2s, some tube amps, a 1229 and a BMW that was either a 1600 or a 2002. Trust fund kid.
I was building a Dynaco, had KLH 17s and thought the BMW was a stupid little Kraut car but I lusted for that 1229.
I'll take it. And maybe once play one of my operas three sides at a sitting ;-}

Your taste in turntables is OK but I have to question your taste in cars.
My BMW is getting a bit long in the tooth so I bought a much younger Mercedes Benz to replace it. I'm not sure I'm all that happy. I may sell the Benz and keep the old beat up e36 with 300 K+ miles on it. I love that old thing.

Back then Mercedes were driven here by Doctors wives, there, old men and taxi drivers. BMWs were famously unreliable, viz. the 2000 and 633 CSis.
Now they're driven here by anyone with $399/month, 36 months, $2000 due at signing.
Back when I could afford anything and cared a bit about cars I owned Saabs.
The only thing I understand about either marque is the now long-forgotten snob appeal. That has been taken over by Range Rover, the cereal box on wheels and re-gained by Bentley which looks pretty much (I drove alongside one last week coming back from Greenville) like that Hyundai copy of a '78 Buick.

Are you sure about that? 45 years would be more like it. The BMW 2002 was released in 1968 or 1969. They say the memory is the first thing to go.

It was 1966 and the handling was impressive but nobody could believe the price for a 4 cylinder "compact".
That same year, supplied by several other "trust fund" kids we had a 289 Cobra, a Super Bird Dodge and Corvette with side pipes and a dual number (?) designation on campus, all with proper V-8s.
