Mark-Almond/ To the Heart...New York State of Mind is a stand out!
Jack Webb's Pete Kelly's Blues
Really enjoying the ZU Denon DL-103
Follow Ups:
... I just had to play the Elements LP called "Illumination".
I bought this when it came out back in the 80's and really hadn't listened to it much since then. But boy, did I play a lot back then (being an aspiring bass guitarist, who wouldn't?).
Listening to this, I would have thought I'd drift back into my 80's heyday of learning bass, trying to bed down my hot, lanky, volleyball girlfriend at the time (now D-wife! YES!!!) and not having to worry about taxes, bills, etc...
Weirdly enough, NONE of that came to mind! Instead, I was amazed at the relatively well recorded/multitracked drums and bass guitars. A little surface noise here and there once in a while, and some IGD on the last track of each side as a result of the T4P fixed tracing geometry (and famous/infamous "standardized" 1.25 grams tracking force, courtesy of my long gone Technics SLQ-200 'table). Some of the sounds are a little dated now, and even sounded completely different from my 18-19 year old memories of this LP.
Overall, it was an ear refreshing time listening to this again after literally not having played it in almost 25+ years.
Holy crap! That album is THAT OLD???

Yeah, I posted the pic.
It was in my get rid of stack but I gave it another chance.
Sure glad I did.

Mark Egan is an incredible bass guitarist (and Danny is no slouch on the drums either!). Until you posted the pic of Illumination, I had forgotten all about this record (kinda bin on a Jaco Pastorius binge lately, so it's easy for Egan to get overshadowed).
Glad I played it as well!

It's weird. The two times I saw Weather Report live, Miroslav Vitous was the bassist before Jaco and Victor Bailey afterwards. The one time I saw Jaco, his band, it was so loud I had to leave.
One of my favorite Jaco solos is on an Airto Moreira album, I'm Fine, How Are You?. The tune is Nativity. Real dreamy. If you don't have it, git it.

I might have to find that title- thanks!
My favorite "Jaco era" is his early works pre- WR. Pat Methany's "Bright Size Life" album, while somewhat of a stunted performance compared to he and Jaco live, has some of the most sensitive playing of Jaco's career, IMHO. He isn't showboating, doing crazy things (literally!) or trying to run/ruin Methany's gig- just being a solid backer with the ability to take a solo when asked. That is the Jaco I truly miss!
BTW, when you saw his band (assuming some version of Word of Mouth?), was this during the 80's in NYC or Lauderdale? He was well on his (unfortunate) self-destructive way by this point!

Saw him in the 80's, Word of Mouth, in Houston.
The Airto is from 1977. The LP is probably cheaper than the CD (on ebay).

The name just sounded like a 70's prog band.

nothing by them on record, but my friend at work burned me the first 2 on CD, Very Heavy, Very Gloomy. Good shit.

I'm a big fan of that era, but never heard of them.
If I'm totally off-base, PLEASE enlighten!!!

.
Overall their recording quality is not great but Mysterious Traveler and I Sing the Body Electric were both enjoyable tonight.
I never got into the pre-Jaco days of WR. Alphonso Johnson just wasn't to my taste. While Chester Thompson was cool and a great fit, I much preferred his higher visibility playing with Zappa, and later on with Genesis (and yes, I'll admit, Phil Collins...).
I grew up hearing WR with Jaco right from the start. Maybe I should have picked up the earlier releases first, because (to me at least), hearing Jaco and them going back was kind of a let down to me. I'm not slamming their music at all. Regardless of who was in the group, Zawinul and Shorter were the centering hub of that band!
Still, I'm glad you enjoyed those albums!

Thrift store find of the year! A NM ECC black box RS bootleg. Three albums. Two with the ECC and one with the white label. Box is pretty much destroyed but vinyl is clean as a whistle!
Sounds so cool! Been spinning them for the better part of a week.
