If somebody offered a direct drive table that had specs at least as good as the technics sl 1200 but better sonics. I e a low resonant plinth, good isolation, the power supply was in a separate box, had coreless motor, a solid arm base, no arm. would you pay $3000 or $4000 for it?just curious
If the answer is yest wahat would be the most important factor in your decision?dee

there is always the vpi for $30k (not in MY lifetime)
most likely would be one the Goldmunds. but that also would be costly.

The most important factor for me would be a low probability of failure. I always buy new equipment because I don't want to deal with repairing old equipment when it fails. I know from experience that after my components become 20-years old they begin to fail and it becomes a hassle of constantly fixing this and that. As far as sound quality is concerned, the Technics SL-1200 satisfies me completely with the caveat of having KAB upgrades and an upgraded platter bearing. Therefore, if the turntable sounds as good or better than a modified SL-1200 I would be mostly concerned with its age and its probability of failure. If the table is new or has been completely refurbished, it would be worth a lot more to me than if it is old an will probably begin breaking.
It is still possible to find new Technics SL-1200 tables for around $1000 if you look hard. When I say new, I mean unopened box, but the manufacturing date is probably 2009 or 2010. A friend just bought two for $950 each and he is selling one for $1400. Another $1000 will buy you all the pertinent KAB mods plus an Applied Fidelity platter bearing. Therefore, for about $2000 you can have a reliable unused Technics SL-1200 complete with tonearm and all pertinent mods. If you want a KAB DC power supply, add another $250.
Best regards,
John Elison
