What other options do you recommend price-wise?

Even $900 for a turntable doesn't sound very entry-level to me. I think Pro-ject and Music Hall make comparable tables. Just saying, if you don't want to make a mistake, Rega is rather risk free.
leave them the f#$k alone. Some "upgrades" may help in some areas, but most negatively affect one of the tables strengths, that of dynamics.
I've heard just about every upgrade that's possible on a P3/Planar 3 and the only one I would do on mine (which I have done on two) is to have the RB-300/301 re-wired with Cardas wire. If you don't care to try this yourself, I can highly recommend Brit Audio for the job.
All other "upgrades" I've heard, with the possible exception of the Groove Tracer sub platter, either had negligible effect or crippled PrAT. The worst offenders were the acrylic or delrin platters, aftermarket platter mats and replacement feet.
So re-wire the arm and sit them on a Rega wall shelf, Neuance shelf or Ikea Lack table and just let them play.

Ya really like those rubber feet?

Yes, I, personally, would consider it a worthwhile P3 upgrade. But that is because of my disabiity. Fiddling with belt position on a pulley is difficult for me, being one-handed. So being able to do that electronically would be a plus. For normal folks it still is a convenience not to have to lift off the platter and move a belt, so if you have a lot of 45 rpm discs, yes, I'd say it is a worthwhile upgrade.
I could not care less what type of feet are under the TTPSU.
