Especially after I swapped out the rectifier tube with a NOS Mazda 5Y3GB.

Is the Mazda 5Y3GB a direct swap with the stock rectifier? No need to make adjustments?
thanks

No comparison.
Bought two from the link below to put in my Cornet 2 and Clarinet line stage but think they were the last two they had as they have been out ever since and that was 3-4 years ago.
Might try Fleabay.

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought one and it looks like he has five left. I finished my Cornet 2 about six months ago and this should give it a nice boost.
a big difference. Not so now. It transformed the Cornet 2 from a very good preamp to an excellent one. I think Perry agrees.

I've tried a number of other NOS tubes in that spot, but the Mazda keeps coming back.
I'm really looking forward to trying it out in mine. I was wondering if by any chance you measured the heater voltages before and after swapping in the Mazda?
Just for the record, I didn't see any change in heater voltage after swapping in the Mazda rectifier tube (6.05V before and after). I haven't noticed a world of difference yet with the new tube, but I've only listened to one record.
Is the 5Y3GB the same as the 5Y3GT?I have a Clarinet line stage and wonder if the Mazda 5Y3GB would be a improvement.
Yes that's the same transition, I'm trying. Did you build your Clarinet? I'm no expert, but based on the guys at the Hagerman site on AudioCircle, it's possible that the different tubes will affect the tube heater voltages differently, either moving them closer to or further away from where they should be. On the Cornet 2 the 12AX7's and 12AU7 I believe should be around 6.2V. If you have the time and know-how you may want to check these before and after making the switch.
until I read a report on Positive feedback and tried the Philips 5R4GYS myself in my power amp. Didn't make much of a change in my preamp.
they still can be had for about $65 @ Upscale Audio.
There is nothing wrong with solid state rectification if the higher B+ voltage before the tubes warm is accounted for in the design. My HK Citation IV (~circa 1960) has solid state rectification. As Stu designed it, it had nasty selenium rectifiers. I have replaced the nasty things with silicon and also added regulation.

some builds were prone to hum via the power transformer. cornet3 eliminates that allogether.
Opus 33 1/3
i can't add a lot of depth to this but there was a general complaint against some of the transformers among builders. not in all cases, mind you. i suppose the thinking is 'why should i be subject to this variable.' anyway, hum is a real drag for an OCD type. it's always there nagging away. you try this and that. and if it is the trasformer and/or the way it was sorted into the machine then ... i gave up on it. which is why the outboard PU is a big plus for me.
then again, how can you say NO when you have alreaqdy had the cornet2 and you know you are curious.
And in my system, it did hum slightly.
I'll tell you what eliminated the hum altogether - I bought some tube extenders (which save the sockets from getting worn when swapping tubes). For some reason, getting the tubes up a little made the difference. You can crank it and now it's just glorious tube rush. :)
i tried that and it reduced the hum but did not eliminate it.
i no longer have it anyway. GREAT sound but the hum...
Have you tried moving it around? Might be picking up something from a neighboring piece of equipment.
it definitly picks up fields, that's for sure.
Bu no mater what i could never eliminaes the hum.
See, you have caught the 'get rid of the hum' bug. ;-)
I even sent it back o Jim but no good on return.
It may have been soemthing in my sysem but none of the other phono's hum so i gave up on the cornet. UNTIL NOW!!!!!
No, it's good now, my DAC was making it hum a little.
i swear i wished i coulda figured it out. the sound of that phono was really nice. i spent about two years fooling around with it. when Jim came up with the seperate wallwart it was like: YES YES..
For my Cornet 2, the hum comes when the transformer is too close to my Bob's SUT.
