I always had a SS amp and a tube preamp, at least since the early 80's.A few months ago I went from a Bryston 4B SST2 to an AR VS115. Already I've had to have the amp repaired and replaced all the tubes. That's not a criticism of Audio Research, it was a used amplifier with who knows how many hours on the tubes.
Don't get me wrong, the difference in the sound is astonishing. But, a high quality tube amp comes with two benefits - better sound and a greater cost. As long as your budget can manage it.
Oh yes, there's a third benefit. I now understand the meaning of a "winter amp". Tubes throw a lot of heat, it's all part of the process.

Turn off the furnace, just play music.
Some tube amps, and tube receivers in particular, can have a large number of tubes in them. I think my Fisher 800 has about 22 tubes...even though most of them are small tubes, it does put out some heat...not so much you'll be opening the windows or peeling off layers, though.
