The Adagio from the Eighth is as moving as music...ANY music...can get. The first time I heard it live was in 1976, when Steinberg did it in L.A....and when the harp first spoke, i almost came out of my seat.
I have over 60 Bruckner 8th recordings (cd, tape, lp), and have heard it live numerous times over the years. I can't get enough of it.
I LOVE the Giulini/Vienna Phil....and find many others very satisfying as well. The Wand IS a beauty, to be sure. I'd rank it along side the Giulini....and agree that the others you mention are a little bit less desirable on this one: Haitink too 'bland', Jochum too straight forward, HVK (any of his) beautifully performed, but not as insightful, and Solti's too forceful. And I'm NOT a Furtwangler, per say. Waaaaay too much of "him"...whereas others let the music do the talking (gee, of all things! lol).
But for sure, I urge everyone to hear a complete Eighth "live" at least once in their lifetime. Certainly the Adagio, and the Finale...done live...are entities to behold.

What's your opinion on the best Lp-era Bruckner 3rd, 5th and 7th? Mono or stereo.
Of the DGG Jochum cycle, the only ones that really did it for me were the 1st and (especially) the charming 2nd, with its very touching slow mov't. They seem the best recorded as well. For all the talk about this set being a "classic," I prefer other individual performances.
I'm happy with the Bohm 4th, obviously the Wand 8th and the Furtwangler 9th, distortion be damned. which leaves the 3rd, 5th and 7th.
Yes, a friend told me that there's a visual element that enhances Bruckner Finales--the entire string section playing their fiery, unison arpeggios as the brass land on their final notes.
