Saw the muscle shoals recording studio documentary. I have Leon Russell 'Carney' (Shelter Records 1972) and Southside Johnny and Asbury Jukes 'The Jukes' (Mercury 1979) both from muscle shoals.
A highlight for me was the Rolling Stones (home movies?) staying at a local Holiday Inn. They seemed a bit out of place. More fitting was to see the Stones as they exit Alabama - by helicopter!
And how about hearing record producer Jerry Wexler recount how he imagined (or plotted) he would want to record/ sign Aretha Franklin after expiration of her Columbia contract? Seeing talent and dollars at the same time.

I haven't seen the Muscle Shoals documentary yet, but this sounds similar to the footage from the movie "Gimme Shelter".

I was infering about Alabama as location for Rolling Stones home movies used in the muscle shoals documentary - context and all. Wouldn't be the first instance of loose poetic license in movie making.
As for the Stones "Gimme Shelter" - My father and our family lived in Monterey Calif. during the free concert at Altomont. My brother and I drove north to see the daylight half of the concert. I remember the huge crowd and I remember seeing leather jacketed "bikers" standing on the roof of a parked, yellow school bus (the bus roof had a good view of the stage). They were hurling, not tossing, full cans of beer into the crowd. Not nice.

Coincidently, I've lived in Monterey since 1974.
Small World, eh?

Already aired here CST. VERY interesting. Those muscle shoals guys were amazing. Liked Keith Richards musing that some of the earlier stones hits like jumping jack flash, et al, might've come out even funkier if they had been recorded at muscle shoals.

Very well done program. I knew of a lot of what was recorded there but the extent of the contributions of those players and studio was news to me.
If it wasn't for PBS I'd have nothing to watch much of the time.
Last evening I finished watching "Bob Dylan, No Direction Home" and was about to go to bed. But then I saw this Independent Lens program which was only a few minutes in. I was hooked and watched to the end!
I see it was the film maker's first film. Being a musician must have helped and I agree, it was well done. Muscle Shoals should be well known to anyone interested in popular music but I didn't realize the extent of contributions by the two recording studios either.
And yes, I'd say at least half of my live TV (not counting movies) comes from PBS.
