"Needs restored"....and he's not kidding! :)
Follow Ups:
dunno if someone cut a deal, or just bought it at the original $1599...but either way, it's gone.
.
Scoffers can rest now.
just realized its a grease bearing and a solid black platter -which some like more than the strobe version - might be worth a couple more benjamins :)
If no parts are missing and assuming the idler is toast it should fetch - maybe - $500 in its present state. That is about 1/3 the top dollar rate for a regular oil bearing in restored shape. While the tonearm is somewhat collectible it would only be worth up to $50 in my opinion were the eventual buyer to sell it off.
I hope someone saves it.
There's decent chance it will ship with some barn critters inside ... Bonus!
Never trust an Atom, they Make Up everything!
For $1600, one can find a much better used table that doesn't need any work. I wouldn't pay $16 for that much less $1600.
...put me down for 1,000.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
1,000 pieces of junk does not a good turntable make.
OH Yucky, it's old and dirty (you might get your little pink yuppie milquetoast
hands dirty) besides it's not VPI or Herron Audio.

Can't judge a book by its cover can't tell how the underside is either. I'd take many for $16 and make a lot selling off parts if nothing else.

If the motor runs, the table is restore-able, assuming it was stored with the platter on and not with an open bearing well.
I could make that table look pretty in a few hours and if the motor worked could easily make it work well.
If not, as you said, there are lots of valuable parts there.

And even if it is restored, it is not a good table by today's competitive standards at its price point.
You are wrong, but that notwithstanding, the guy who buys it can clean it up in around four hours, put it in a $300 plinth, and turn it for a decent profit.
Are you saying that a $1600 table in that condition is worth more than a HW-19 IV with a modern Jelco arm? The only value that table has is nostalgic, especially compared to more modern tables.
The value of the Garrard is not just "nostalgic" in nature. Some would say that in restored condition its potential performance is far superior to that of the VPI you cite, if value has anything to do with performance. Some, apparently yourself included, would say otherwise, and those persons would tend to devalue the Garrard. Then too, there is "the market". The market for a Garrard 301 is based both on collector value (what's it worth to someone else?) and performance. Even if you don't like idlers, the collector value is undeniable. So, you are asking for a comparison of apples to oranges. If you like idlers, the Garrard is a good one and worth the money because of the collector and market value systems that govern the cost of vintage items.
I have my doubts. More posts would just be beating a dead horse. We should agree to disagree. :)
Did you really just insinuate that a VPI is a great table?
Yes, some but not all.
Well, we'll see if it sells.
BTW, are you selling any $53k Saskia II turntables? How many have you sold?
See you in Chicago.
Best regards,

It sold.

It has the rare "missing one foot" option.
Prediction, it will sell for somewhere between $1200 and $1600.

They are very rare in that condition. I'm sure he could get a lot more but he probably wants a quick sale. ;-)

A schedule 1 grease bearing brings good money these days, and that one has nice paint, even though it is dirty. It will, like he says, clean up nicely. A new idler wheel and mat are small money. Ready made plinths are affordable, too. I don't think it is a bad deal, really.
I have a 301, oil bearing. Mine hadn't been used in years, but cleaned up easily and with a good arm and new plinth it is a dead quiet idler drive with the proverbial PRAT.
They are built to last and with a little cleanup will make good music for decades.
