You'll find a lot of VPI fans here. I'm not one of them simply because I switched recently from springy turntables to solid plinth ones, that is, Rega. Nothing could be less fussy. There are after market upgrades available but not necessary. Mine is noise free and rock solid. If you're not handy (I'm not) then you might need a dealer to set up a different cartridge than the Rega. That's what I did although I have no opinion on Rega cartridges. Got an Ortofon just because I used to have one I liked and it's a highly regarded brand.
2 cents.

Thanks for the recommendation. I do like the simplicity of the Regas.
If you don't have a local dealer near by, they have a great US support via Sound Organisation. ( US distributor for Rega with a great stability )
The same goes for the vpi for factory support but it's a bit more involved than Rega for an optimal set up.
You really can't go with either companies.
But they do have a different house sound and the only way you find out which one is for you is to listen yourself.
my new RP6, also having a range of colors is nice FWIW.
