I ran a speed test on my new pioneer exclusive motor unit tonight using the iPhone speed app. It has come up as 33.7-33.8, which would seem to be about 1.7% out. As it is just the motor unit I can't listen to it yet, but I am wondering if that is an acceptable level, and if not how to remedy it.

How do you know it's the turntable and not your iphone app?
I suggest getting a good watch and time for 90 seconds...in which time you should make exactly 50 revolutions of the platter.
You refer to it as an "Exclusive", but I think you also said it was a PL70. So far as I know, there were only two models marketed under the Exclusive label by Pioneer: the P3 and the P10. Nevertheless, the PL70 is purported to be very high end. What kind of motor does it have? The Exclusive tt's used coreless motors. Have you had it serviced at all? If not, I would suggest you replace all the electrolytic capacitors in the drive circuit before worrying about absolute speed. Also, I am not at all sure about the error limits for the iPhone app. You might try a KAB strobe or the Timeline, if you can borrow either and assuming you don't already own either, before you worry about the exact numbers you got with the iPhone.
Most likely there is a way to dial in the speed once you can feel confident that you don't have a leaky electrolytic capacitor causing problems and once you are sure of the speed data.
