I use a SS retipped DL-103D on a modified RB-300 arm on a modified Denon DP-62L turntable. I have a 103M as a backup.
The DL-103M is a strange bird in the Denon 103 line. It comes with a Boron Cantilever and "Special Elliptical" stylus. It has a relatively high output impedance, 40 ohms, for a cartridge with a very low output, 0.12mv/Ch. It is similiar to the 103D as far as compliance is concerned. Both are medium dynamic compliance cartridges.
If you are going to use the 103M with a stepup trannie keep the very low output voltage and high output impedance thing in mind. It can cause issues if you don't have the right trannie for the 103M. Most trannies designed with the type of gain required for the 103M are designed for cartridges with very low output impedances. Most cartridges with an output of 0.12mv/channel will have an output impedance around 5 ohms.
If you are going to use a head amp for the 103M the standard warnings about very LOMC cartridges exist. Keep an eye out for the noise level in the head amp.
If you already have the trannie or head amp thing covered the sound of the cartridges are somewhat similiar. I make that statement assuming the 103D is retipped. The Boron cantilever and "Special Elliptical" stylus on the 103M makes it a more resolving cartridge than the 103D out of the box in stock, Denon, configuration.
The 103D is more a bit more dynamic sounding than the 103M. The 103M is no slouch as far as dynamics are concerned but the 103D is reknowned for its slam factor. The 103M is a tad more polite...if thats the word.
All things considered I would say the 103D is the better of the two cartridges. If you equip the 103D like the 103M with a better cantilever the 103D is every bit as capable of digging out subtle details and it has an edge in dynamics.
The audible stuff above plus the fact its easier to mate to a stepup or head amp and I think you get the picture.
