I've tried over time to locate a very good copy but even the very best I've nabbed have fairly significant sonic issues, e.g. 'break-up' on the musical peaks on an even apparently minty copy.Of course this is something like trying to land an excellent Sinatra/Capitol, i.e. highly unlikely sat idle in someone's collection given the obvious popularity. Hence it becomes nearly impossible to come to any definitive conclusion ... i.e. the master has sonic flaws v. played to death?
Wondering if anyone has experience with either know mint copies and/or reissues who can comment sound quality (absent potential worn LP issues)?

Sealed demo for review copy it seems. Here's hoping!

Have you considered the broadway version with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel? Martin sings with a wonderful earthiness that's hard to beat. I have a mono Columbia 6 eye version that is sonically wonderful. Bikel is great, too.

… there's a Sony K2 limited edition CD now available - Elusive Disc has it. 'Spensive, though - 40 bucks US. Expanded w/ add'l tracks and interviews, allegedly fine sound (24bit/100khz). Actually sounds like a better deal than 60 bucks for a sealed reissue of uncertain provenance. But like other folks have said, you can probably find a better than acceptable early pressing at a low low price if you bide your time and keep hunting. There's lots of them out there.

Not to rub your nose in it, but I found an original copy, black label/white dog 1s/1s NM/NM, still in shrink, with pristine booklet, for $1 in my local junk shop a few years ago.
It's one of my wife's all time favorites and we've played it several times.
I seem to recall seeing several other very nice copies in the same junk shop over the last few years. I guess my point is, they're out there and they can be found or bought.
It is sealed NOS...see below.

Life is analog...digital is just samples thereof
Well now I have a bid on a sealed one on eBay LOL ... probably cost as much after shipping

My youngest sister was born in 1964. While my mom was in the hospital, she struck up a friendship with the woman in the other bed who's husband was an engineer.
And, as it turned out, an audiophile. We had dinner at their house and he used The Sound of Music soundtrack to demo his system for us.
Yes, it was that good. Got my dad interested in components, led directly to my own obsessions of today.
If I were you, I'd keep looking. I'm sure RCA sold millions of copies of that record and sooner or later you'll find one that wasn't played to death on some groove-grinding console stereo.
I've had no problem finding undamaged copies of Frank Sinatra's earliest Capitol LPs. If they're out there, so is your soundtrack.

Thanks - on the other matter ...

It was mission impossible for me! I eventually gave up and purchased the MFSL Capitol Box Set, used but excellent!

I've had a harder time finding good copies of Sinatra's early Reprise albums than the Capitols. Those Capitols might have a bit of crackle (even though I cleaned them) but no groove damage at all. Even In the Wee Small Hours on the old gray label with the radical outgroove, perfectly clean and undamaged.
I'm surprised that none of the audiophile reissue companies never picked up The Sound of Music soundtrack.
How often did RCA reissue that record? You might be able to find an undamaged copy on the orange label.
