I have this mounted on a Thomas Schick tonearm which is mounted to a custom birch-ply plinth containing a Garrard 401.The arm is currently set at 3.85 grams tracking force and the tonearm appears nearly level.Rather than re-invent the wheel,I thought I'd ask other users.Ortofon recommends a level tonearm and 4 grams tracking force. Thanks everyone and enjoy the holiday

Seems like you're just about right. On my Lenco, I run a Royal GM II and mono GM II at slightly lower than the middle of the recommended VTF range with a level tonearm.

A few days ago I just reinstalled my SPU NE wich is a nuded Classic E. Seems to track anything from 2.3 grams. Antiscating set at 1.5 grams.
Starting with the tonearm level is very fine starting point. In my system raising the arm like 4 -6mm seems to give a bit more midband treble clarity.
This cart still amazes me. Its openness, midband clarity and drive is just wonderful.I`ve had SPU`s circulating in my system for more than 30 years.
Have fun - Jan
Thank-you for the responses folks.I'm really enjoying the SPU! Next I'm goung to add an Auditorium-23 mat to replace the stock Garrard mat. This is my first turntable in a VERY long time and I'm enjoying many of my records that I kept from the 1970's (lots of stuff on the ECM label) as well as lots of Monk,Coltrane,Tyner etc.
You are welcome.
Wich SUT or mc amplification are you using?

Jan-I'm using a Shindo Montille amp and Monbrison preamp, so I'm in a little deep for a bum like me.I would like to try a Bob's Devices or Auditorium-23 SUT at some point, but right now I'm tapped-out as far as discretionary income is concerned
WOW !! Lucky you
A beautifull Classic system; SPU and tube amplification. I would imagine that the SPU matches your system very well.

I always wondered why some later SPU carts were made for 4 grams. The vintage original stereo SPUs were great at 2 grams; 3 grams only sometimes.
If your cart came with specs saying 4 grams, but you find that 3.85 is fine and there is no mistracking with heavily modulated grooves, stay with your instincts. Have you tried 3.5 grams ? How about 3 ? You can always go back, right ? I suspect you will hear mistracking and know when to raise the weight. Typically, we stay closer to the manufacturer recommended higher tracking force, to avoid any possible chatter/mistracking. Best Regards and ENJOY the SPU...
