Rather than a landfill, scratched or broken 78s can be used by woodworkers. Dissolved in alcohol they are useful for shellac finishes. Maybe offer them to a woodworker instead?

That's an interesting thought. Have you actually tried this or know of it's actual use?
The biggest doubt in my mind is that 78s contain lampblack and other fillers, which may make them unsuitable for use as a wood finish?
Dissolved in alcohol, 78s will create a black shellac. Don't use on high traffic/use items or near water or alcohol. Perhaps coat with varnish. Would make a handsome and appropriate plinth finish for a 78 spinner or electronics cabinet.

Yeah they're classical and I know that doesn't help matters...but Goodwill probably won't know the difference. Yes, they're really nice...and I do worry about careless, ignorant staff people there breaking them...but by that time they're out of my hands and the outcome is all the same to me. I just gotta do this...I worry about having to deal with them if I have to move or, God forbid, I should suddenly drop dead LoL. I'll phone them in the morning to make sure they will receive them.
