I am kidding of course! But have you noticed the questions on these forums have gotten stupider and stupider? I mean what has happennd to our society that we get what is the best..fill in the blank and what is the best color resistors.... give me a break....

I thought this thread was gonna be about using a bag of sand for a center weight ;).
It's not that there is not a best whatever for a particular person. It's just that no one can know what it is for someone else. The only way to know for sure is through personal experience. Unfortunately that can get rather expensive in this hobby.

but I once dropped a bag of...er a... NO I never dropped a bag of sand on my TT. My closest calls have been from my feline companions. They usually do their dirty work when I'm not around.
;^)
Yes, really. My college roommate and I were moving into a new house. He had stacked his stereo components in a corner and covered them with a towel or something so that I did not notice them. I came in with a very large potted plant in one of those ceiling-mounted hangers. I looked around, saw a hook in the ceiling, and hung it there. Not long after, we both heard a crash. The hook had pulled out of the ceiling and dropped about 20 pounds of terracotta, damp soil, and foliage right on top of a Technics TT. Amazingly enough, only the dust cover and cartridge were destroyed.
What is the best ___?Maybe in our insta-on, multi-tasking society I should not be surprised that anyone in this hobby believes there could possibly be one single best of anything. Real newbie questions are hardly ever dumb, but anyone who thinks there is but one specific component answer that fits every application and personal taste is a true rookie.
Thanks AudioSoul, I feel better now.

Everyone knows that green resistors are the best.
But they do give me indigstion. . .

We don't shush around here!
Life is analog...digital is just samples thereof
I don't know if anyone can top my dumbass move...
Last year I was moving my Pioneer RT-1011L reel to reel deck from a wall mounted shelf. It slipped out of my hands and landed on the Jelco tonearm mounted to my Technics SP-15. It might as well have been a "bag of sand" for the damage it caused.
when I read your sad story. Sorry for that. It is just the human condition that we constantly seek order and end up with chaos, both in the short and long run of life. The only saving grace is to laugh at ourselves.
Yeah, you're right. I can look back and laugh although the dent in my wallet to replace the tonearm was not so funny.... :-(
So far (knock wood), I have not had an audio accident of that magnitude. However, I worry about having one nevertheless. My tube OTL monoblock amplifiers weigh about 80-90 lbs each. When I want to tweak them I have to carry each one of them down a flight of steps to my basement workshop. The chassis' are also so huge that I cannot see what's in front of me whilst traversing the stairs. One of my nightmares is dropping one of the amplifiers during the descent or tripping and falling down the stairs with it. This is why I "save up" ideas for tweaks and install them all at one workbench "sitting", about every 3-4 years.
As I age, I become more and more conscious of the weight of each unit in my audio system; there is going to be a point where I can no longer lift any of it. Sorry about your tonearm. At least it seems your tape recorder survived OK. (Monty Python: "Always look on the bright side of life".)
It was a Technics. Had it been a Linn - I think the repair bill would have been four figures.......

Perhaps, I'm not familiar with Linn.
At any rate, although the Jelco tonearm got wasted, the Technics itself was unharmed. I would've really cried if it got broken. Although a 'freebie' from a local radio station, I just love it.

I went to buy some 100 ohm resistors a while back & found out that the blue ones are 5% tolerance and the cream coloured ones were 1%.
Since these things tend to be cumulative.....
But perhaps I'm being too serious. Got any links ? I've not seen any of the posts to which you refer.......
I was aiming for the tonearm and I missed. ;-)
