Fred not only mentions the use of a stereo microscope with excellent resolution, but also the huge importance of proper side lighting in a darkened room.

  the level of magnification is too low, 200 power is closer to what is needed to see flat areas developing on the sides of the stylus, IME...

    Nope, I would trade magnification for light. Fred mentions a jeweler's loop
