A solid blue label is likely your best bet - $15 or so on ebay. I have heard a DMM recently and it wasn't too shabby either.
Follow Ups:
I'm waiting on the Music Matters 45 of Adam's Apple. I'm still only two years into listening to jazz, so there are still some glaring holes like Adam's Apple and Speak No Evil in my collection. I have cds to hold me over until I get the vinyl. Both 45s are up for pre-orders on the various sites, Acoustic Sounds, Elusive Disc, etc. The 45's will just be easier than finding a nice older copy, and since they're both such fantastic records, I won't mind flipping the records more often at all.
But I'm listening to my 70's blue label of Jackie McLean's "One Step Beyond" right now and it sounds nice. They can be a good value if you can find them in NM shape at $25 or less(usually less, but I did pay $25 for this McLean record because it was at a local shop and I was trading stuff in and I was really jonesing for it). There's a 45 of it coming out about right now, but I think I'll just stick with the blue label.
The 45 speed reissues sound amazing. A friend subscribed to the Blue Notes when they came out and has every one of them. He has so many LPs that a third of the 45s are still sealed! I have benefitted because he usually has a duplicate copy to sell once the 45 copy arrives. I briefly had the 45 version of Larry Young's "Unity" I snagged used for $20. It sounded awesome. My current Japanese King 33 pressing of "Unity" is good enough for me.
My main table is a PTP4 version of a Lenco L75 and I only spin 33.3. It would be a pain to change speeds. The thrifter in me also likes the idea of occasionally finding a first pressing or early pressing for around $10 to $15, versus the $60 for a new 45 speed LP.
I have been collecting and listening to jazz LPs for nearly ten years, after first going crazy with jazz CDs. I too still have holes in my collection. For example, I somehow ended up not having Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else." I don't want any old copy and won't pay through the nose, so I am still looking.
Do you have the first 4 Elvin Jones LPs on Blue Note? They are sensational. Clean first pressings can be had for $10 to $15. I rank them with any other Blue Note LP - really, really cool!
I just heard back from Music Matters that they are going to be doing Inventions & Dimensions. I'll snap that up for sure. I like the Liberty pressing, but I'll definitely want to hear the 45 of this one!
Thanks for the heads up on "Succotash." Top 3 jazz albums on my to-buy list are Inventions and Dimensions, Something Else and Black Saint & Sinner Lady. Haven't had much luck with cheap used copies in good condition, but still holding out...
