I haven't seen a post here on the passing of Peter Bergman, one of the founders of Firesign Theater, on Friday. I was not well acquainted with Bergman himself, but I do know that his radio show was where the Firesign was born.
For anybody interested in vinyl, the Firesign Theater was a group that really pushed the limits of what was possible. Just listen to the road signs whooshing by in "How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You're Not Anywhere at All?" Or the line ""Why don't you pull your mukluks out of the cellophane before they scorch?" in Nick Danger. A lot of people in my generation could recite whole sides of the first three Firesign albums. Peter and his friends were artists who could combine high and low humor (no pun intended--their work was not just for stoners). In practically every minute, you got silly jokes and pointed history lessons.
So thank you, Peter Bergman for taking us Forward into the Past.
Follow Ups:
The question posed to him was "How would you like to present The Firesign Theatre in the future?" His closing comments:
"We are Fighting Clowns! I've always felt that my art has to serve a greater social purpose, which has to do with how I see the world. Generally, The Firesign Theatre has always been very much in the forefront of investigating the system, questioning authority on a very deep level, and as soldiers, and as Fighting Clowns, we will continue to do so!" (end quote)
I think things just got a little more complicated where Peter is now, our loss indeed.
Porgy, your a white man, you have to help us!

Why don't you guys play more Firesign Theatre on the show? Over the years I've almost never heard a Firesign Theatre skit :)
You're willing to trade everything, Mrs. Presky, for that little bag?
rip big guy, you were loved.
And you know what?
I wish 1/2 the albums I own from that time period sounded as good.

Rest In Peace, Peter, you were a Light.
A nice audio stab from the past.

Was the protagonist an audiophile?

Their albums are thick with LA references that I never got because I'm an East Coaster, like, "Pico and Alvarado have been out on patrol for a long time."
When I first visited LA I kept running Firesign Theater and Zappa in my head. "Going to El Monte Legion Stadium..." "Selling lamps and chairs to San Ber'dino squares..." etc.

Some of the Jesuits in attendance seemed a bit perplexed, except for the college President who congratulated the group afterward.

You know, (or don't you,?)
Nick Danger was a spoof on the "Thin Man" .
I heard this show (link below) on "When Radio Was" one morning, and realized it's where Firesign got at least some of their inspiration for Nick Danger
