I know a lot of people like triode connected 6V6 so I am doing 6AQ5s but what cheap driver would be good?
Follow Ups:
The key difference between the 'AQ5 and 6V6 is g2 fragility. Use a higher value resistance in connecting g2 to the plate and all will be well.
I used the 12AT7 in "El Cheapo" as the driver and it is FINE. :> D

Here is a triode PPP 6V6 I am building.
I like USA manufactured Raytheon 6CG7, but that lower gain tube needs a preamp. I use 1/2 a section of another Raytheon 6CG7 as a preamp. If using just one driver/phase splitter only, I would use a 12AT7. It has enough gain.
yea, I plan to use a preamp as the 6aq5 amp would just be a power amp
You cannot beat USA manufactured Raytheon 6CG7 black plate, but are rare & almost all used are unbalanced due to hard use in TV sets. An alternate are Sylvania 6SN7GTA. The Sylvania have a hotter high frequency response, but extremely clear sounding vs other 6SN7s.
Only 12AT7s I recommend are Sylvania 12AT7 triple mica grey plate or for a more neutral sound are Tung Sol 12AT7 black plate. Some are noisy, but quiet Tung Sol stay quiet.
