...noise suppression primarily. Death is on primary side, line to chassis. I'd be inclined to keep the cap in question in circuit but using a modern and conservatively rated part.
I'm with Steve - I use 1600 volt caps in that position BTW. The stock voltage is usually 600 volts on vintage gear which I consider too low.I also only use good brands like Panasonic, CDE, etc.
