Upping the capacity of the new caps is OK but don't get carried away. Larger value caps should fit with no problems as new caps will be smaller than the originals due to advanced technology.
I replaced the P.S. cap in a 70's Phase Linear amp and the originals were 13,000uf and measured 3"dia. x 6" long. The replacements were 15,000uf. and measured 3"dia. x 4" long.
The most important thing is that the voltage rating MUST be equal to or greater than the originals.
Brand name is probably irrelevant but I tend to stick with Nichicon or Panasonic.
Go to Digikey, Allied or Mouser to find replacements.

Good information. Thanks!
You can actually go up to 50% over with no problem and sometimes you have to order to get caps to physically fit.Caps of the same value you are replacing are many times much smaller than the originals were when the unit was made.Receivers that I get with 6800uf cap[s,I typically replace with a 10,000uf Nichicon,Philips,or Panasonic. It's most important to get good quality caps.
On the tube amps,I replace 40uf sections with 100uf so you have judge every case differently.20uf I replace with a 50uf. I typically go 2.5 times the original except off a vacuum tube rectifier.
