I'd ban ya too! You can't even use a ladder right!
Some groups are pretty good over at AK. The Marantz guys are always polite and try to be helpful just like over here. But yes there are one or two groups I've peeked at and it's a knife fight at times. I mean personal attacks at times.

Na just a big ass imprint.
Grumpy owns AK. He is the person that banned me. I could care less. His business is located in Royal Oak. Grumpy thinks he is a real important person. He owns other sites. To tell you how far Audiokarma is behind AA, in the Fisher Forum they never heard of a K40Y-9 coupling capacitor. The established rebuilders used Orange Drops and similar capacitors. They removed the ERO II original coupling capacitors and those Fishers sounded worst than stock. That is how bad their Fisher rebuilds sounded. And stock Fisher does not even sound as good as stock Scott tube receivers such as the 340B.
The head rebuilder/advisor there rebuilt power supplies with 27 volt AC ripple into the power tube section. Wow! Good tech, but no clue to what sounds good. In a matter of 60 days I was taking a lot of their business.
The head rebuilder also did not know what PSU2 power supply simulator was and then stated he did not believe it had any merit and likely was not accurate- go figure that!

I always thought of Audiokarma as more of a older vintage fan crowd and here as more progressive. There are pluses and minuses to both. People here seem to be more likely to fall for stuff like super high priced usb and power cables etc while there they are less likely give anything new a unbiased try. The thing that I like about Audiokarma is the board software though. Older threads seem to get active again regardless of when they get added to later while here they seem to die.
Interesting take on the Scott. I like my fisher 400 both stock and tweaked using Dave Gillespie's instructions more than a rebuilt 340 that I have. Not that the Scott isn't good also.
Stock form I like the smoothness of the Scott. Rebuilt, I take the Fisher by a long shot. A stock Fisher compared to my rebuild is night & day difference. It requires the right coupling caps & tubes. Most rebuilders do not replace the two ceramic capacitors in the audio section. Ceramic are awful audio performers. Also most do not rebuild the phono section. Without the right capacitors and tubes, the Fisher is far from a peak performer.
I have not found a rebuilder to perform the K40Y-9 capacitor replacements and best performing tubes with one exception. I will not mention names, but a well known & respected rebuilder uses substandard capacitors. a lousy power supply design & pays no attention to tubes. What more can I say.On the other hand, AA contributor Michael Samra does use K40Y-9 and swaps tubes.

Look at all the advertisers he has lost.I can tell you more stuff but I won't do it on a forum.Anyway, this is unquestionably the best audio forum in world and you can tell by the stability of the moderators and the way everyone extends a hand to share knowledge.

Is it me or is there less action both places then there was a decade ago? Maybe less overall interest in hifi/stereo stuff?
Edits: 11/23/16
my understanding is that the hifi discussion has largely moved to social media (FB and the like).
I don't "do" FB, so I cannot vouch for that, but that is what I have read.
all the best,
mrh
That sucks. I have no interest in any social networking. I'm too old and ugly to have much use for it. haha.
I don't even know what facebook looks like
Your right. Post has taken a turn. Simply, thanks for the feedback.
Some of it has to do with posters aging out. Some of it has to do with the lack of affordable used gear available like in the EARLY days of ebay.
Some of it has to do with frustration of the endless audio trendmill that has become far too expensive to play on.
Now I see a lot of people either dabbling in very low end stuff or ultra high end stuff. Or just dabbling with the stuff they were smart enough to hold onto, unlike MYSELF!!!
You missed the most rewarding option of all, DIY from scratch. I started 15 years ago when prices of vintage gear drove me away. Have not been sorry since. LOTS of great designs available on line and lots of freindly help available at tubes diy.
Tis' true! DIY is some of the most fun. Years ago, I was in charge of the engineering labs where I worked, so I had access to the instruments and tools, and reserved a bench for my own use. I also had a place to work in my basement and borrowed instruments from work. I did some scratch building, but to my own designs. I did a successful mono tube amp, and a successful solid state amp. Mostly to prove to myself I could.
I was a lot younger back then. Today I'm 78 and live in a condo; so I really don't have a good place to work, although I do have my own instruments - used mostly for tests and service work. Mainly, I've kind of lost interest in DIY, but there are still some good deals to be had on good used gear.

My wife and I lived in small apartments for quite a few years when we first moved to this area and were looking for a home that suited our needs, but I always managed to keep a bread boarding set up in a corner of some room. Sometimes it was only a single channel I did, but I tried literally dozens of designs. It was and still is great fun. I am lucky if I find one piece of vintage gear a year anymore. Everyone has a computer and most of it ends up on Ebay.
My DIY days are over my friend. I broke my neck in 2005 and ever since I've had increasingly more pain bending my neck. Especially down.
Between this and a few other things slowly all my avenues of pleasure are being closed down.
ENJOY it while you can.
happy holidays

My back gives me lots of trouble these days, so I know what you mean. We do what we can.
