"For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong" H. L. Mencken

I've been going through the ESQUIRE online archives lately, and found some good ads from KLH, Garrard, Frazier, etc.
Here's one from KLH.
I remember hearing the Model Twenty and it offered advantages where KLH already matched good amplification with the speakers. That certainly made it easier to get a decent sounding system for a reasonable price.
But if you're really into this hobby, what's the fun in that? ;^)

Yes, I worked at a record store/hi-fi dealer for a year after college, and they sold KLH systems like the one here up front and the serious, component stereo at the rear of the shop.
I remember debating with myself about the all-in-one approach vs. component, since we were selling component systems for less than the Model 20, and that included KLH Seventeen or EV two-way speakers.
Components won, and I was hooked for life.
Bill,
Me, too! I liked the Model 20; but I was already a hobbyist, and it really wasn't the right direction for me. It was a nice music playing appliance; not a hobby friendly thing.
But the literature I got included a review that explained how the Model 20 was greater than the sum of it's parts; because it was "systems engineered". That was an epiphany for me, and got me started on a very long odyssey that continues today, as I keep trying to build the "Super Model 20".

I have seen at least 4 of them at thrift stores, but I let them be. It is a nice concept, but wouldn't come near what I was running when I saw them. Better to leave them for someone who would enjoy them.
I know what you mean, Jerry, about a "Super Model 20". You are preaching to the choir when you talk to me about matching components!
Dave
Jerry,
I hope you succeed in building the Super Model 20. Just stay away from Bubinga wood, as it seems to add cost and weight. Actually, I have four blocks of it at home that I use as bookends for CDs.
They are really funny.
I remember Chesterfields back in the day but I didn't know about Chesterfeels.

Most commercials promise either sex or intoxication.

Most of those Ads wouldn't fly in today's P.C. world.
Do you believe those were "real" adverts? I don't! They strike me as something straight out of MAD mag or similar.
"Devil Chef" is a contemporary comic.

Devil Chef comics .Chesterfeels was the brand of a candy cigarette.
Your second link only includes one from the first batch. The Bell & Howell looks legit.
