I was due for a new phone, so I purchased an iPhone 7 a couple of weeks ago - I uploaded some Apple MP4 converted tunes to it, and wow, the sound was exceptional - great stereo separation and really couldn't believe how much it had improved.
Also got it with 256 gigs of storage, so I should be set for life, or as long as my hearing stays functional.
I recommend it!

I keep getting beat up for my flip phone which is usually out of power in my glove box. I have a car charger.
I'm not sure that I want to be that connected. My kids or the wife can give me GPS directions on their phones. What do I need one for?

The only reason I updated my flip phone for a iphone 6 was because I was moving. I DID need the texting because I was 2800 miles away from my wife and we needed at times a quick communication. Also we no longer have a land line that was costing us $150 a month - for what I have no idea?
It's odd but the more technology progresses the less I trust it to actually work because of corporate greed. Also technology has turned into nothing more just coming up with better ways to get a sales pitch in your face. Paranoid people really think information gathering is the government - ha - it's for ads!!! Honestly at times that I am AMAZED at where and how they sneak an add in.

I couldn't disagree more. I couldn't imagine not having an iPhone today!
Since my wife and I travel quite a bit, I regularly use several apps for air travel, car rental/Uber and hotels. Always have access to email and internet.
I have a number of financially related apps for banking and access to credit card information. All my insurance cards are available.
I can't tell you how often I use navigational aids. From driving directions, to real time astronomical maps and the ability to mark where I've parked in situations where it may be difficult later to find.
I have a home security camera which notifies me of activity and allows for real time viewing.
I use the weather and radar maps on a daily basis.
I'm a runner and have an app that tracks all my activity and provides important metrics. Have a golf app which provides accurate distance to hole. Scuba dive tables.
I have a number of music related apps. I use iPeng daily to control two of my music systems. Create playlists on the fly. I calibrated my turntable speed using an app called "rpm". Listen to XM radio, Amazon Music or local content while mowing the lawn on my tractor. Have a nifty SPL meter.
And, its just doggone handy to always have access to my business calendar (along with my wife's in the same view), high quality camera, contact list and dead accurate clock and timer or alarm.
Good old "digital technology".
Of course, I/we hope you've got more than 36 months' of listening ahead of you!
all the best,

Had a 3GS for many years. Once the iOS was not compatible with the phone it stopped asking me to update. No problems with working at all.
Same is true on the iMac I use at home that is about 8 years old now. The last software update I did was to Lion.
One issue that is a problem is with iTunes. If you have an old OS like XP, the new iTunes is not compatible and if you update a phone over wifi it then won't sync to the old iTunes.
Problems arise when you start storage of things on non updated devices. They get you in the end. You can use a 256k IBM computer until the end of time. But try transferring those files!!!!
As long as you're not storing anything you're fine. Once you start using it for documents, banking, music - you're there's!!!!
Not sure I understand why docs are an issue. Never had any problems with the old phone even when using apps made for newer iOs. I used it for streaming radio or playing music in my car and when traveling all the time. The music player, browser, etc. never failed to work for me.
My iMac is my primary home computer and I have no issues with any file types, playing music, banking, or anything else.
Why would I have a problem with storing files?
current iOS 10 supports the 2012 vintage iPhone5.
Call it 48 months. :)
I wouldn't put any faith, hope or depend on ANYTHING either Microsoft or Apple Especially on any long term basis. It seems like they change there software DAILY!!!!
I especially HATE Microsoft!!!! For all you Person of Interest fans out there. I think Finch should install Windows 10 into Samaritan. That would shut it down real fast trying to figure out how to get around Grove music. Frigging bastards! This is the last microsoft device I'll be typing on!!!!
MicroSoft is really MacroShite. To be fair, IBM is not International Business Machines, but (among other "zingers") It's Better Manually.
As a 45 year plus "computer wars veteran", I'm constantly reminded of 2 truisms: to err is human, to really "foul" things up, use a computer and GIGO (garbage in/garbage out).

You forgot the biggest problems with computers and their support.
Either something is unplugged or it's user error or just reboot and pray.

Take your iphone and - ahhhh I was gonna tell a dirty joke but I stopped.
No really - now go on the web and look for a site called vTuner.com
search the Genres for what kind of music you like and start playing/streaming to your stereo. But do make sure you are connected to wifi or you will eat up your cellular data.
I've been using my Marantz NA7004 network streamer for years as a source and I love it. I was forced to start streaming years ago because I no longer had any FM radio stations that were listenable. So commercial FM did me a favor in the end by giving me the push to leave FM. Kind of sounds like cable TV doesn't it!!!
I have the iphone 6 and I would like to find out is if there is a way to output only a digital signal and still use the volume control on the iphone itself. Not in the analog headphone jack output. Never did get an answer from iphone on that????
I blame the FCC (and of course, by extension, all of us, the voters) for allowing the FM dial to become monopolized by "big radio" that is annoyed by the music they are forced to play in between commercials.
Used to be a reasonably successful individual could aspire to actually owning a radio station and broadcasting their passion. No more.
Pay TV just sucks and is an awful value. They are going to go the way of Polaroid by not reacting to the market fast enough. Of course, maybe not because they own the bandwidth...
For digital output from iPhone. Not sure about volume control however.
Happy listening...

I hope you're old. A device like that even with an SS HD won't last forever, especially if dropped. Be careful.

Yes, but you get one with the phone, and extras can be bought on eBay - I've already bought 2 extras, they're about $7 each was the cheapest I could find.
