I have a tired looking and stained black case for the 730. Short of a paint job, and I don't know which paint one would use, is there any technique to clean and restore the look of the black case? This probably applies to many other brands as well. It would be nice to have it look new but not shiny. Thanks Norm

Ihave restored a few HKs and found that a good cleaning followed by Endust gets most of the crud out from the grooves of the black rubberized finish. The Endust is actually a mild abrasive that will help with removing scuffs as well. I then finish with a good protectant such as 303 Aerospace Protectant. The HKs that I restored using this method looked remarkebly good.
How bad is the vinyl on the case? I would get aggressive with the cleaning. More than soap and water, some rough cleaner, Ajax or the like. I would also try some car cleaning chemicals if there are stains and such. Then a nice final clean with soap and water. Let dry and if it still is not monochromatic, it would need a shot of nice quick dry, satin black paint, Krylon is my go to. If you are going to store stuff on it, get a paint that sticks to plastic, if not the standard paint should work.
If it is monochromatic when done and just dull, any of a hundred car chemicals used to make black trim look good is the answer. Whether that be Armor-All, back to black, black again etc.
There is an auto product call Back to Black for refurbishing the appearance of black painter trim. Mother's brand I think.
Should work on the cover finish on your HK730.
Have you updated the capacitors on that? It's now around 40 years old. A restoration would bring back the sound it originally had. You can also increase the size of the main power supply filter caps by 50%. For better bass.
I had one of those; but like a lot of early HK stuff, it had intermittants caused by poor solder joints on the boards. I ended up reflowing every joint. Still one of the best looking receivers ever.

Want advice on painting? Ask modelers. Those guys paint lots of stuff.
Oh, and the 730 is a classic. One of my biggest hi-fi regrets is not buying one in 1977.

It has been awhile since I had one around but if I recall correctly my HK 430 cabinet had a textured surface of some kind of coating, such as thin vinyl, rather than paint. So I used a mild detergent and old toothbrush to clean mine.
I don't know about the HK 730.

I wish I didn't sell my 430 and 930. Can't remember the exact model numbers just that they were "hot" at the time. I do remember liking the smaller one over the bigger one.

Home depot has several texture spray paints. One I use a lot on metal casings is the wrinkle texture. Works well and easy to use. Try to remove as much of the old paint as possible and clean it very well with a tack cloth. Also found in the paint and refinishing isle.
Or you can find a local auto parts dealer. They also carry many kinds of excellent wrinkle spray paints that were used to restore old dash boards.
