I think it would be very difficult to come up with a way of objectively verifying that cables have or do not have a sound.
I think you can fairly say that about most components.
I don't think I could hear it in a system that I was not totally familiar with.
Agree, although I find that the more resolving the system, the easier it is to hear differences.
I clearly remember comparing two different CD players at Sea Cliff. Harry would always ask me first my impressions during those sessions. I ended up buying the one that "lost". :)

I am not clear on this. Did you like the one he did not like? Having sold CD players in the 80's, the sound was different enough between player that different people had different preferences.

we both agreed on the results.The comparison was between a GamuT CD-1 and the Burmester 969 transport / 970 DAC . The Burms had a wider and deeper soundstage and were superior in transparency. First octave response was more impactful.
I still found the GamuT to be an excellent (and affordable) performer if not at the stellar level of the Burmester combination. :)
I had just missed meeting Ole Lund Christensen who had delivered the GamuT.
