Well what about my morning pop tart - I don't see any improvement there!
No really I agree with you. Technology and development has definitely sharpened up audio. That is one reason why I just can't go back to vintage speakers and preamps.
But carefully choosing your pieces I do believe you can incorporate old and new. As well as using some of the older techniques, eg cabling wire, to your benefit if budgeting is a factor.
We all would like to try a $400 cable or speaker wire but some of use are no longer have that killer income.
Charles - just sitting by the pool in AZ now.

If you recall, the reference to $400 cable was what I believe is required to get better results than examples of good cable today such as the Belden 1505F I referenced. Recall my suggestion and later offer?
My comments were in putting these decades old comments by Nelson Pass about 12 gauge zip into perspective today:
...and better than most exotics.
"Exotics" then were, well not much different.
I sold cables in the 80's and I can tell you that there are differences. Then, pretty much everything had polypropylene as a dielectric, the purest copper was "oxygen-free" and there were a limited number of configuration. Now there are many more configurations, you can get six-9's and linear crystal copper, and there are a large number of configuration that measure quite differently. I can't tell you if it does make any difference to the sound, but I can say that this invalidates the results for the Pass tests for today.

I just have to smile when folks dreg up decades old results.
Especially when they reference Roger Russell tests of 24 gauge zip vs larger zip and conclude that - for then and forever there will never be any better. :)
I think it would be very difficult to come up with a way of objectively verifying that cables have or do not have a sound. I do feel I have heard a difference with specific cables, but it was subtle. I don't think I could hear it in a system that I was not totally familiar with.

I think you can fairly say that about most components.
I don't think I could hear it in a system that I was not totally familiar with.
Agree, although I find that the more resolving the system, the easier it is to hear differences.
I clearly remember comparing two different CD players at Sea Cliff. Harry would always ask me first my impressions during those sessions. I ended up buying the one that "lost". :)

I am not clear on this. Did you like the one he did not like? Having sold CD players in the 80's, the sound was different enough between player that different people had different preferences.
Dave
we both agreed on the results. The comparison was between a GamuT CD-1 and the Burmester 969 transport / 970 DAC . The Burms had a wider and deeper soundstage and were superior in transparency. First octave response was more impactful.
I still found the GamuT to be an excellent (and affordable) performer if not at the stellar level of the Burmester combination. :)
I had just missed meeting Ole Lund Christensen who had delivered the GamuT.
