A colleague in the SF area has a SS Marantz, sounds like early Superscope era. Wants to get it fixed, but recoiled at the ballpark cost I guessed at for a serious upgrade. So, I'm thinking, probably new electrolytics, and non-audiophile other parts as needed. Are there any techs in the SF area who can get it done at a reasonable price and time-frame?
Thanks!

You should also look over at the AudioKarma Marantz group. I know there a are a few professional restorers there. However you will be shipping it. I seem to remember I was going to have my 2230 restored but the guy was in Montana or some distant state????
But they may know of some one more local to you

I'll put in a third reccomendation for L&M -
I have used them a bit over the last 3 years - an older Nak Stasis Receiver and a few McIntosh items - very good work and Honest-
they will also let you know if they feel that it is not worth it-
Good Luck
Happy Listening
A lot of people use l&m.
They have a good rep.
Also the soundwell in Berkeley.
You can try Nick Gowan at True Sound in Campbell. Not sure whether he would take on a receiver or not... but he is certainly capable.
On vintage Marantz: I've restored a few , even their big quad receivers. I've also had a root canal... not sure which experience was more favourable.
They can be a bear to work on. I find that there are less and less pros willing to take on fiddly receivers, tape decks etc. They take a lot of time and finding/ sourcing equivalent replacements is half of it. Most Marantz receivers of the late 7o's used bad small signal transistors and under-rated caps that all need to be changed. .. its a labour intensive job to do it correctly.
Good luck with it.
L&M Electronics in Daly City across the street from the Cow Palace is very good. They work on older stereos. They charge a diagnostic fee to find out what is wrong with the equipment. The fee is applied to the repair bill if you have them actually fix the item.
Same owners as when I first met them twenty years ago. Good people who stand behind their service.

been around forever but I haven't used their services in years.
Just lucky I guess, but was always happy with them.
At the link.

You can try Mike Zuccaro in the San Diego area. He's good, honest and was friendly last interaction I had with him. I don't know if he still does private work but email him and ask.
BTW what Model Marantz are you looking at?

I don't remember the model...it was the SS 70's vintage that had me in mind of the Superscope era. Just a brief conversation, he was taken aback by what I paid for a Sonic Frontiers Line 1 SE+ upgrade. (I, on the other hand, thought it was a good investment.)
Gene's Sound Service has a pretty good reputation.
