I like the idea of using a very simple crossover with a really good tweeter.
Follow Ups:
Nice to hear from you. I hadn't thought of Dynavent as a moniker for them. Trying to work SEAS into it just never worked. I'll have to see if Dynavent sticks.
Yes, the very simple crossover is just enough filtering to protect the tweeters from the low frequencies. The woofers in all three systems just gradually roll off smoothly, and then through the choice of cap and L-pad setting, the tweeter is just blended in. On my RTA it gives a very smooth peak and dip-free transition and it's very coherent and seamless.
I did try the equivalent soft dome tweeter; but the metal dome version sounded more coherent to my ears.
Bass is clean and tight; but not as robust in the Advent cabinets as the Advent woofer; but 2 dB of bass boost in the Rotel tuner-preamp worked out well with no sign of too much midbass on deep male voices. Imaging is spectacular, and I think that has a lot to do with the smoothness of the mids and highs, although the NAD C350 has meager channel separation and screws up the imaging. With the Rotel gear, the image is stable, very wide, and deep.
The ported JBL cabinets with the same tweeter, a different SEAS woofer, and not quite mirror imaged are punchier in the bass, have the same smooth mids and highs, and because of the asymmetry of the cabinets don't image quite as well. The KLH 17's with the Morel tweeters have a slightly different midrange, and a less robust bottom end; but are still nice to listen to and are seamless. They would really benefit from a small sub.
If you ever get back to this neck of the woods, please stop by.
Jerry
Someday, I'd like to give your Dynavent a try in in a thin-walled lossey style cabinet. No time right now though.
