What were some skinny preamps back in the day?
I am looking for one for my space-challenged four-shelf rack.
The Perreaux SM2 was a skinny dream, but it is a bit expensive for what I have in mind.
Currently, I am looking at a Kenwood C-1.
Any others?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Many more that I could have thought up.
After some more looking, I settled on a Parasound P/FET 900 MK II that was going off auction at EBay. According to specs I found online, it's only 2.5 inches tall, so it should fill the bill.
Kind of a poor relation of the JC-2.
Take a look at the Counterpoint 3.1 ($350 - $500), or the 5.1 ($800 - $1200).
I had the 3.1 and it was fantastic, especially for the money. If vinyl is important to you then the Counterpoint are renowned for their great not good phono sections.
Both of the preamps are 6922 based. The 3.1 has three tubes, where as the 5.1 has five.
Oh yeah, they are very "skinny".

Technics SU-C01 Micro Preamp is really small nicely featured and well built

I have one of those and I did not even think of it. It actually is not a bad sounding preamp. They were not cheap when the were new. I bought a stack of Technics micro components in a thrift store a long time ago. I don't think they were very successful, so they may be hard to find.

These were available for a number of years and can approach 40 years old now, so if you find one some updating would be in order. Great phono section.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Some of the older Classe ( CP-35,CP-30 ) preamps !
Do you need multiple inputs and selectors?
The Placetto passive is small
Bill, you probably won't find one of these, I'm looking, the Ace Model 3000. Ace was a small kit company who's first preamp was the Zero Distortion in 1973.The 3000 came out in 1977. Because of it's low sillouette it was called the (pancake). Thats the skinny.......Mark Korda
I used to sell the Perreaux and it is very well built, but sonically, it is not much of a standout. It is not a bad sounding preamp, but IMO the sound is nothing to get excited about.
If you want a slim, great sounding preamp that can had for not much money, look to Yamaha. The C-40, C-60, C-80 etc.(and other C- double digit preamps) are just what you are looking for. The Yamaha C-2/C-2a/C2x would be even better but they are far more rare and can go for serious money.
Another very good slime preamp is the Hafler 110. The sound is excellent and because there are so many of them, the price is reasonable. I have one on my test bench. I like the way it sounds and I like the way it is put together.

Plenty still floating around.

GAS 'Thalia"
Threshold FET-9/SL10, Dayton-Wright SPA
That is probably my favorite SS preamp. That really was a very tube like sounding preamp in every sense of the word. The SA/2 amps are also gems.

Yep, very nice preamp released fifteen years later.
Great preamps, but if he had sticker-shock on the Perreaux ...
Dave
Yes, this is for a transitional system that probably won't be the last word. So, something less than a JC-2 (LOL).
