I know that there are 4 different versions of this receiver. Do they all sound the same? Is one reputedly the best model from a sonic standpoint? I am not clear as to all the differences inside, but for me it's the sound that matters. I don't have one but would like to consider getting one, but I am not sure which version I should get. Thanks Norm

I don't know all the changes between versions, but I do have schematic diagrams for the -II and -IV versions. Both have FM multiplex, if that matters to you - I believe the earliest 8000s are mono. I don't think there are significant differences in the audio sections (7868 and 7591 are the same tube with different bases).
There are more than 4 versions. I had 2 s8000, not marked for version. Both stereo. These were the first version. One was 7591 based, preamp and drivers 12ax7. One 7868 with 12ax7 preamp and 6eu7 drivers. Mpx sections different. Also had a mk IV,7868 all preamp and drivers 6eu7.
The early versions had dc supply to the filaments of the preamp tubes. The mk IV used ac. The mk IV had a stereo indicator light and tuning meter rather than eye tube.
Sold them due to downsizing.Liked them all.
