Hi, of all the many audio projects I have in the works I never get em going until I have all the parts.
I'm finally down to new tube sockets for a Dyna Mark 3 pair rebuild. I was looking in Parts Express and Antique Electronic Supply and was not sure what would be the best way to go. I thought you guys would be the best place to go first to make this the best I can.
I'll need 4-6550 tube sockets and 2-5AR4 or GZ-34 diode tube sockets. Thanks in advance for any tips.....Mark Korda

While the ubiquitous Chinese tube sockets are the economical choice i have found that the "fit" of the generic ones are lacking. In other words they are made with too much slop in the tolerances. I found that the ones that i bought you could wrongly insert an octal tube nearly halfway down the socket. The vintage ones and the better quality sockets have better tolerances so that you would not be able to do that. Even if the sockets are prettied up with gold plated solder lugs and are made with ceramic they are not the ones to get. IMO, it would be better to get the little more expensive ones like Beltran or even better vintage Amphenol, Johnson, and Micanol, which is probably the original brand. cheers, Dak
Hi, great info Dak. Thanks, I was wondering about the gold ends and soldering, if there was a different twist in the soldering technique. Eli, how do I get in touch with Jim McShane? His name kind of sounds like a Duke Wayne character...Big Jim McShane...thanks guys...Mark K.
Hi Mark, I am just addressing the generic type octal tube sockets that are so cheap when compared to the vintage sockets. As far as soldering to the pins it is not an issue so regular soldering techniques are fine. It is just that the quality is really not what you would want to deal with in terms of the fit of the tube into the socket which is pretty critical in terms of long term reliability. cheers, Dak
Dak and Eli, I found (Dyna-parts) and they have the sockets for 3.50 that they use in the ST-70, Mark 4 and Mark 3's. They said these are the ones that are included in their kits. I bought them. I wouldn't have until I got or understood what info you guys gave me, and I thank you again..sincerely Mark Korda.
Contact AA sponsor Jim McShane. He'll sell you parts that fit , at a fair price.
