What I mean by this is the fact that the writing comes off the tubes and being a 12AU7 and a 12AX7 look almost identical to the naked eye,so many people will put 12AU7s in their phono or line stage that takes a 12AX7 thinking it has a problem when it doesn't. You will lose tons of gain or it will oscillate depending on the amp but always be sure you can differentiate your 12AX7s from your 12AU7s because its a common problem. It will work many times but it will be weak.

I grabbed a warm EL 84 in the wrong spot and took some lettering off. They were a 1956 date code in excellent shape but what I did hampered attempts at selling them on eBay last year. Live and learn.

If someone shows concern about the quality of print on a tube, I urge them to shop elsewhere. That's one concern I don't share and won't fuss over for someone. Who listens to the print?

As you know Mikey, I did that very thing to my Sherwood S-5000. Thanks to you, we got it remedied with no harm done.
By the way; The S-5000 phono section you rebuilt is sublime and I am amazed everytime the needle hits the groove.

Thanks Stace but many have done this and it's an honest mistake and one that's easy to make.

Hi Mike,
There are Telefunken tubes in both of my Scott 222D amps. The writing is intact. My understanding is that these are likely still good. What is the best way to handle the tubes to preserve the writing?

Treat it like the mantle on a Coleman camping lantern. Never touch it. (at least the side with the labeling)
You got me..I don't have a clue.

Agreed. To make matters worse, a bad testing 12AX7 can look like a good 12AU7 in the tester.
You are right.

With the reduced gain, I would think the owner would immediately know something's up (or down in this case).
Oops....wrong driver. This looks cool. I'll try this tube. Nope. This one? Nope.

In the case of putting a 12AU7 in a Sherwood 12AX7 phono stage, the plate voltage drops from 145 to about 50v but it still works but has about a 1/3 of the gain.Tube rollers are the ones that get into trouble many times..You have to label those tubes.
