I thought some of the vintage proponents may want to read this.
Meat; It's the right thing to do. Romans 14:2

Good piece, and it's missing just one tidbit: in the vast majority of studios, old gear is what drives them. Mics from the 60's or earlier (U-47, KM56, 414, 441, 421, U-67, U-87, SM57, C12 & C24); old hopefully recapped consoles from Neve, MCI, EMI, Trident; compressors from Urei, Teletronix, dbx,, and Gates; the ubiquitous Pultec EQ.
And... all studios with this old gear take advantage of the latest and greatest, like the stunning Avalon mic preamps, Lawson mics, and amazing converters.
They also go for new gear that is based on classic designs but takes advantage of components not available then, like the Manley compressors.
So, the old includes the new, and the new includes the old. It's all good.

thanks for sharing-
Good read and great perspective-
Though I may be biased - the most recent piece of equipment that I purchased - this past Jan, 2016: a pair of Quad '57s...
Happy Listening
I liked the example he gave of "cutting edge" gear.
Some folks, however, think the PAT-4 falls into the same category. :)
Just because something's old doesn't mean it's any good...
all the best,

I'm wondering what to do with a PAT-4... It is a nice LOOKING unit, certainly better looking than I could DIY. Any ideas for replacing the guts somehow?
John
maybe you can fill it with these partsthis site has the parts for an upgraded tubed pas
get that parts only option and use YOUR chassis

Contact AVA. While the web site currently does not show a PAT-4 rebuild, I distinctly remember them having such upgrades in the past. Perhaps they could accommodate you.

(well, the vacuum tube models, too... but that's a different topic!)
Google search will turn up numerous cogent links:

One of them is linked to below.
The best thing to do with a PAT-4, though, is probably to gut it and use it as a platform to build something nice. They're cheap (mine was a freebie, bundled with an ST-120). I've used the PAT-4... afraid to try the ST-120, though!
all the best,

If you can afford the cost, Frank VA's total ST-120 rebuild is worth considering. The chassis and heat sinks get recycled. Just about everything else, including the power trafo, goes.
I've had units rebuilt by AVA. The results are excellent .

That's what FVA is good at! I had him work his magic on a PAT-5 back in '77...
