I asked Joe a question a couple weeks ago by email, had an answer the next day.

Joes a great guy. I used plenty of his stuff for many years.

How do you like your tubes4hifi board in your Dynaco LAtino?
A friend you get for nothing,an enemy has to be bought
I try not to get into ratinge wars. Joe is a swell guy and really puts his heart into this hobby. And Bob over at tubes4hifi, well they just don't get any nicer and helpful. Bob is another version of you!!!! Great person who really cares and will NOT leave you high and dry - EVER!!!But if I had to put the first prize ribbon on one board it would be tubes4hifi by a mile. But fair being fair Bob's board is sitting on a new and beefier version of the old ST-70. While Joes is sitting in the stock chassis and trannies version.
If anyone is considering a tube amp they really should consider Bob's VTA ST-70. It's a clear winner. Even if you are in the market for a 70 it STILL would be cheaper to buy Bob's then an old one and restore it.
But for you Mike, you've heard them all. The best and worst of the bunch and I would be MORE!!!!! interested in how YOU would rate this amp.

I have Bob's old 4 tube 6922 board and I also have one of his older power supply boards that I built on another board and had etched. It is well filtered without using lots of capacitance because of the multiplier gain circuits he uses. The 6922 I board I have sounded sterile but it was detailed. It made it sound like a good solid state amp where it was correct but it lacked life and excitement in the music.I have heard his later ones that sounded more conventional tube like and I may purchase one of those.
The Tubes4hifi board I was using for 2 years even before Bob came into the picture. It had so much potential and you could wire it for so many different types of 9 pin tubes..The Tubes4hifi board sounded very dynamic and balanced mush like the Curcio but,it also has that realism and openness we've come to expect from tubes. The big thing tho is the fact that it frees up valuable room where the bias circuit pots and filters used to reside so now you put in film caps for filtering.. Roy and Bob have made subtle changes to the circuit over the years but really haven't strayed from the original circuit.

Hey Micheal, how's it going? That's funny about the Curcio boards. I've never heard them but how you describe it is how I feel the VTA stuff I've heard sounds. Everyone else digs it though.
Not to muddy things further but I thought the diytube designs sounded great

Hi Mikey,
I think you might have meant "Joe's" 4 tube 6922 board?
With regard to the VTA circuit, you indicated that it is lively sounding. Do you find its liveliness varies depending on which power tube is used? I ask this because, in my observation, some EL34 tubes have just always sounded "slow" to me across different amps. For instance, I've listened to EL34s in Prima Luna, original Dynaco, and Octave Audio amps, and they all had what I have come to think of as EL34 softness and slowness. I have noted that a number of folks over in the tubes4hifi forum have gone to other power tubes, like the 6L6, KT66, and whatnot...
Thanks.
Peter
try the Shaguangs. A very nice el34 tube. Lively it IS. If you can put KT66 in your amp do try the gold lions. I'm running them in my vta and they sound wonderful.

I have used the Valve Art branded EL 34B on several amps. Very nice tubes and dirt cheap.
Chinese tubes - yes. I have been thinking of looking through the archives in the Tubes forum to see what kind of information is there. I may post there to pick up on this - thanks for mentioning it!

Power and driver tubes affect it..Right now I run 12au7 tele in voltage amp and 12BH7 Raytheon black plates in the phase splitter driver along with 6L6gc black plate RCAa or the 6P3Se or the 6L6g tubes I have in right now.
