Oh, I have waxed poetic over my FMI-80s here over the years.
They aren't going anywhere, and will be coming with us to our new home.
I guess the point I wanted to stress was, that elusive quality of "spooky realism" so eloquently and succinctly pointed out by Chef Henry that the Hartleys portrayed.
Everything is relative of course, but because of the work I do, I get to hear a lot of consumer sound systems in the sub-$100K range. Within that range, over the years I have never heard, nor owned speakers that did the "spooky realism" thing as convincingly as the Hartleys. This includes the current crop of products too. I haven't heard the DSP controlled Kii-3 or B&O speakers though, which are harbingers of the near future I think.
On a side note, I am currently doing an experiment with the Fultons. I have cut out the wood and cement board to make new enclosures for the Fulton drivers. They retain the exact inner volume and aspect ratio as the original FMI-80s, but are using Baltic Birch and Triple Wall Baffle ala Albert Von Schweikert.
I wanted to hear what the original drivers would sound like in a "modern" enclosure. I also want to do some hammer veneering, and this is a small enough project for me to tackle.
Follow Ups:
The Hartleys sound like speakers that I would like to hear. I have not heard the Kii-3's, but I have heard the B&O's. I think they were setup with a "smile-curve" so I couldn't wait to get out of the room. I am a big fan of BBC-style lossy thin-walled cabinets, but have never heard Triple walled birch like the Von Schweikert. Please post your results.

I'll be sure to do so. Tomorrow I'm going to make the journey to my buddy's shop and do some more work on them.
The Hartleys were not as dynamic as some speakers that I hear, nor did they have the deepest bass, nor most pristine highs, but damn, they did the "Spooky Realism" thing more convincingly than anything else that I have ever heard.
What's more, I had them hooked up to a Rotel RSX-1550 most of the time watching TV and movies and the like. Both my wife and I were quite often caught swiveling our heads around wondering if what we just heard was real or done by the speakers.
The Fultons and Revel F208's that I have here now both do low volume (wife friendly) tv volume better than the Hartleys which needed a bit more juice to wake them up to sound uniform.
