In Reply to: RE: Citation 14 tuner needing restored. Who do you recommend? posted by lektrik on March 18, 2016 at 18:04:25
I attached the link. After you read it you may change your mind. Unless you have a complimentary set or a sentimental attachment you might reconsider having it rebuilt. I'm sure the cost would outweigh the value. Used FM tuners these days are cheap and plentiful. I'm playing devil's advocate but it's worth considering.

of OUTstanding SOUNDING tuners, along with an McIntosh MR 67, 71, 77...{77 I still own} along with a Scott nuvistor 312. I have owned the following over the years... McIntosh MR 78... Accuphase T-100 {great AM}, Yamaha T-1, T-2. Sansui 719, Marantz 115B, 120, 2110, Kenwood KT 7500 , KT 8005, and numerous pieces of dreck along the way. Incidently, I gave the Citation 14 totally refurbished to my son, an heirloom tuner surely.

I have nothing against tuners that perform well as radios, but I am far more concerned with the sound quality than, say, adjacent channel rejection or even sensitivity.
That said, hk tuners (and receivers) have tended, in my experience, towards the pretty good in respect of both radio and hifi performance.
all the best,

If those three tuners sound half as good as they look, then they must sound fantastic!
Nice pics.

I got a Tandberg 3001 a short while ago that had been gone through by Joseph Chow and it sounds excellent. I'm not wanting to spend the money Mr. Chow charges on this tuner. Just wanting it to sound pleasing (which is not where it's at at this time).
I just wish there were better stations in the Boise area. The one I like does not have a very strong signal and all the others are owned by a couple mega-corporations and they all suck in their own varied ways no matter how different/unique they try to sound.

I saw that a while ago, but thanks for bringing it to my attention again. The tuner is part of a set that I'm having restored. A lady gave me her husband's Citation 14, 16, and 17 after I bought a pair of Infinity Quantum IIs from her for $50. I don't have a lot into them initially, so I don't mind putting a little money into the set.
If the cost seems to be too much I may re-cap the tuner boards myself, then send the tuner in to get fully checked out, aligned, and set to spec. It will be nice to have the entire set running without a glitch, sounding great, and looking good in their walnut cabinets.
