Most vintage speakers have a built in roll off at the top for various reasons. Modern speakers tend to be flat up top which can make the overall balance sound "thinner".
And, if you were accustomed to popular "rock" speakers of the day like the JBL L-100, then you'll need to boost the upper bass (boom) and lower highs (sizzle) to duplicate it's personality.

I'm nearly 59 with hearing only out to about 12k and don't hear burglar alarms like I did at 18, but I still abhor bright sounding systems.
I dunno. I think the human experience still detects sounds higher that we can *hear*. The U1s still present more air than the New Advents. :)
